چکیده

We study a novel mechanism design model in which agents arrive sequentially and each in turn chooses one action from a set of actions with unknown rewards. The information that becomes available affects the incentives of an agent to explore and generate new information. We characterize the optimal disclosure policy of a planner whose goal is to maximizes social welfare. One interpretation for our result is the implementation of what is known as the ’Wisdom of the crowds’. This topic has become more relevant during the last decade with the rapid adaptation of the Internet. ∗We wish to thank Michael Borns for his invaluable editorial work. †Ilan Kremer: Stanford University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, [email protected]. ‡Yishay Mansour: Tel Aviv University, [email protected]. Wisdom of the crowd from unsupervised dimension reduction

Wisdom of the crowd, the collective intelligence derived from responses of multiple human or machine individuals to the same questions, can be more accurate than each individual, and improve social decision-making and prediction accuracy ([1, 2, 3, 4, 5]). This can also integrate multiple programs or datasets, each as an individual, for the same predictive questions. Crowd wisdom estimates each...

Recent advances in information technologies such as Web 2.0 have dramatically expanded the use of crowd wisdom in dealing with a wide range of problems. Prior research confirms the importance of crowd wisdom in the context of stock markets, but fails to investigate the impact of crowd characteristics on crowd performance. We study the influence of opinion diversity and participant independence ...

Intuitive Biases in Choice versus Estimation: Implications for the Wisdom of Crowds

Although researchers have documented many instances of crowd wisdom, it is important to know whether some kinds of judgments may lead the crowd astray, whether crowds’ judgments improve with feedback over time, and whether crowds’ judgments can be improved by changing the way judgments are elicited. We investigated these questions in a sports gambling context (predictions against point spreads)...
